This month is a gateway to you fully and totally stepping up as the leader you are—holding space for the disenfranchised, standing on the front lines, being of service. If you are already a leader of service, again I say: get ready. If there is any doubt in your mind that you can help or make a difference in this world, it will be gone by the end of the year.King of Cups is lighting a flame in you that cannot be extinguished. The revolution and evolution of our collective will have an enormous amount to do with you, Sagittarius—yes, you!

The teacher, the archer, the sage. You are not without your flaws, of course, but this has to do with something much larger than ego and personal mastery. This is about transcendence, about transparency, about sharing your words and experiences so that others may be buoyed by you, healed by you, inspired by you. King of Cups has honored you with his invitation, and this card’s energy promises to transform and deepen you immeasurably. King of Cups is a leader for the lost, for the scared, for the one who is searching for a light in the dark. He is the one who can get people through crisis. You will be in some deliciously epic energy in December, all thanks to the medicine of the Akashic Records. This card is an extra Major Arcana card in the Starchild Tarot deck, one that the creator of the deck channeled. It is a very special card, very powerful, and truly indicative of the hard work you’ve been doing this year, Capricorn—getting a card this powerful to round out your year is most certainly deserved and bodes all things beautiful for your 2017.

So here’s the deal with this card. For those of you who do not know, The Akashic Records are a kind of universal filing cabinet, holding within them every thing that has ever been done, said, expressed or created since the dawn of time. Every being has access to this infinite knowledge and wisdom by virtue of their birthright: the key is accessing it. One of the clearest ways is to simply ask. One can get certified, one can read a book, but regardless of any official titles or experience, it is enough simply to remember that we were born with access to anything that is in our highest and best to know. This is where you come in, Capricorn. You are leveling up, evolving, and coming into the next phase of your life on this planet. This is a HUGE transition. It might not feel that way, but this card is bridging you into 2017, and it is not going to allow you to stay small and locked in old patterning. Ace of Swords, reversed

This will be a very humbling and empowering month for you, Aquarius. Ace of Swords, the sacred lightning rod of the deck, is showing up reversed for you this month. That’s not a bad thing, but it will be something to acknowledge and pay attention to as December unfolds. In some way, there is a disconnect between what you are ready to create, to birth in your life, and the energetic means to do so. It will be important for you to clarify where this disconnect is, and bridge the gap. It will be deeply useful for you to buckle down and do some not so sexy work around this: talk to a therapist, create a business plan, work with a money manager, support your brain chemistry with meditation, food or medication, work on self sabotage—whatever you need, you will be energetically supported in undertaking.

It is really important that you disengage with any story that arises from this. Just breathe and take the first step toward self-support. As soon as you do this, everything you desire to manifest (and that desires to be manifested through you) will be able to flow into your life effortlessly. Ace of Swords is a divinely charged energy, a kind of lightning rod for the creative, mental process. It is a mini Magician card in many ways, connecting us to Divine so we are able and available to receive brilliance, new ideas, and inspiration from above. We rarely have to do anything to synch up to this frequency when Ace of Swords is right side up—it just happens, and we are always at the right place at the right time. When the card is reversed, as it is for you this month, Aquarius, it’s a gentle heads up that the Universal connection is turned on, but your volume is turned off in some way.

So, you may be feeling that you’re disconnected, when in fact, you just need some support to help you to turn up the volume on your channel of receiving. For some of you, this is in relationship to your career—for others, it relates to your personal life, specifically around love. Knight of Crystals

Slow and gentle is the name of the game for you this month, Pisces. There is no rush, despite what your feelings and your brain might be telling you. Knight of Crystals, or Pentacles, is the slowest and gentlest of the Knights. He is the mover and the action taker most likely to pause and aim before an undertaking. When he takes off, however, he never misses. It looks like he has fallen behind, when in fact he has just taken longer to make sure his aim is true, getting everything organized and aligned before he hits the ground running.

This is the most important medicine for you in December, Pisces, to truly align yourself with the archer—aiming your arrow and taking your time before you release. This is related to career endeavors, decisions, moves, love—across the board, you are taking what might look like a breather to the ego, but is really a preparation, allowing you to be fully clear, available and aligned in your life choices. Trust and embrace this time. You still need a little more aim time before you fully plunge into your goals and plans for 2017. But don’t mistake for a moment that taking the time to get clear before moving and shaking is a waste—you are not going to be just hanging around this month. The Knights, again, are all action oriented, and as I mentioned above, you will still be moving and hustling in your life in a big way this month. Expect lots of awesome opportunities, perhaps even some surprise ones. Just focus your energy and attention on HOW you are moving, rather than the amount of stuff you can accomplish. You have great ambitions, Pisces—one of the less talked about qualities about your sign. This is a wonderful trait, and Knight of Crystals is helping you to get organized so that your visions can be supported. This month, ground your dreams and manifestations with lots of deep breaths, clear plans, and earthly support. Clear your space, cleanse your home, get your affairs in order; take care of business. December is a time of rebirth for you, Aries. Pure and simple. This is not necessarily a physical, earthly shift— although for some of you, it might be. The main directive of The Fool’s energy this month, Aries, will be to help you to release fear around failure. You are moving through this specific mastery right now. You know instinctively that it is time to come out of the birth canal, out of the warm womb of “playing it safe” and into the dawn of the unknown; from hiding to being seen, from dark to light. This is going to be an immensely powerful month for you, Taurus. The work of The Hierophant is multilayered, and this card will be working on your sign in both big and small ways, internally and externally. The Hierophant, at its deepest essence, is an invitation into belief inquiry. It asks us to consider what we we truly believe in. Are these beliefs are serving us? This is partially because they have an emotional undercurrent—far more more than thoughts or feelings.

Look at the fervor with which people regard religion, their politics, family and cultural traditions. Its tough to see reason within those places—or to be brave enough to admit that the beliefs we may be living through might not aligned for us. The Hierophant doesn’t come to scare us, or create fear in our lives—the deepest medicine that this card will offer you is for you to be your OWN teacher, your own guru, to look to your own school of thought, rather than outside of yourself. Have you ever questioned what was told to you by your teachers, mentors, parents, culture, religion, or school? Do you agree with them? If not, don’t toss the baby out with the bathwater. Just come back home to your own truth; rewrite the laws of your life so they serve your soul. The more you do this, the more your life will change—more spectacularly than you could ever imagine.

The more you allow outdated and false beliefs in your life to die away, the more space can be made to birth a life based on your own inner wisdom. In some area of your life, Taurus, it is time for you to step up as the master and leader that you are, if even just for yourself. Do not give your power away. The impact you have on other people around you is greater than you imagine, and our beliefs can mightily sway our interactions. You are flying in the energy of Knight of Swords this month, Gemini! Expect a whirling, fast-paced month in which a phenomenal amount of accomplishment, manifestation and goal-setting will be possible for you, simply by the sheer force of your effort and will. December is a month of results, getting shit done in a way that will most likely baffle your friends and family, wondering how you are still standing. Do you know the phrase, “chop wood, carry water,” Cancer? This is your mantra for the month of December. If you can come back to the energy of that phrase over and over again, it will transform your life in ways that appear subtle at first. It is not the horrific energy that most people believe it to be. It isn’t a nightmare, it isn’t necessarily painful, it doesn’t bode death, or breakdowns or even mental anguish—quite the contrary, actually. What it offers us is the opportunity for a profound shift of the mind, of the heart, of the body, of our lives. It is a mindfulness bell, chiming to let us know that our thoughts are causing us pain in some way, and that we need to become clear on this so we can change it.

It is important to deeply reflect on our mental cycles, how they are either serving us or keeping us locked in contraction. How are we relating to an aspect of our lives that we desperately want, but it’s not coming? How do we relate to the future? To our anxieties? To jealousy, comparison, or grief? To getting old, to our children, or our partners? Ten of Swords can crop up around any of these areas, flagging them for review and renewal. You get to profoundly alter the relationship to your thinking this month, Virgo, and only goodness will be born in it’s place.

Stay present, curious and light around this idea this month. Ten of Swords is, after all, a card of the mind, and we do tend to identify with our thinking. But thoughts do not equal truth; it will be important to remember that this month. There is nothing to fear. Ten of Swords is bringing some incredible gifts, but if we stay locked in fear or resistance, we will not be able to receive them and allow the full transformation to take place. Think of Ten of Swords as the wake up call. That’s the freedom it is offering you this month. From here on out, you are free to create a new life for yourself, one that must include a more gentle relationship to your thinking. LIBRA :: LIBRA RISING
Oppression/The Devil

You’re going to be working through some very powerful energies this month, Libra, especially around—what else!—your thoughts. That is, after all, what you are here to master in this incarnation with your Sun or Rising Sign: to be in perfect balance even during times of imbalance, letting nothing shake your walk of peace. Bearing that in mind, you get to do some beautiful work in this mastery this month. This card has come at a crucially important time, Libra—it has shown up for you as December’s energy because you are actually doing everything RIGHT. When we are expanding, upgrading, and getting ready to be hurtled into an amazing new time in our lives, we can also get tossed into The Devil card.

Why? Because the brain is programmed to keep us in energies that are comfortable and familiar—it’s main directive is to keep us alive. Soul evolution and growth are NOT comfortable and familiar for the nervous system. The brain will actually work to trip us up and keep us in known, low-frequency territory by reminding us of that ex that treated us like shit, by encouraging us to get drunk every time we sit down to write, by keeping us locked in obsession with social media, or with self-doubt, self-loathing or self-sabotage. If this is happening to you, it is actually a wonderful sign! If the brain is working so hard on getting you distracted and unsure of yourself, it is a clear sign that you’re headed in the right direction. The primal part of us will fight expansion—yet the soul craves it desperately. It is in that sweet spot that we flower open like wild roses.

The Devil is not a card to fear. It would never show up for you if you weren’t ready for it. The Devil, or Oppression, is simply a mirror, offering you the opportunity to cut the chain of an addictive pattern of thinking, declining the brain’s invitation into staying safe and small. No more judgement, no more story, no more getting swept up into cycles that keep us locked in the very thing we are swimming out of. Once we stop the judgement, we are free to actually heal the addictive cycle, to give ourselves what we truly need. You are doing everything right, Libra. Keep going, and don’t let the brain screw around with your expansion. It can tantrum all it likes—you keep soaring higher.

Four of Wands

December is inviting you to let go and shake your tail feather a bit this month, Scorpio—finally. It has been all work and no play for quite some time, whether it has looked like it or not. You are truly ending something huge this month, perfectly aligned with the closing of the year and this cycle in your life. Trust all that you have learned, created, released and moved into—now, celebrate. Honor the births, the labor, the effort, and soak deeply in the glow and results of your hard work. You deserve it immensely.

Four of Wands is a beautiful card, one that invites us to honor some kind of rite of passage in our lives. This invocation can be both amazing and challenging, the challenge being that our culture has a very finite collection of these transitions that we actively celebrate: marriages, births, etc. There is so much that goes unprocessed and unhonored in our collective culture: a girl’s first period, moon ceremonies, death ceremonies, divorces, the changing of the seasons, etc. Four of Wands is the heartbeat of the ancestral way, calling us back to this ceremonial acknowledgement of a transition in our lives, whether pleasant or heart wrenching. If we bow over to this card and her invitation to us, we come together, stop our work, rest in the moment and process all that has gone and all that is to come. We make ourselves ready to move into a new phase. Our ancestors lived this way, in tune with the larger waves that flowed through our lives, and through the seasons.

What does this have to do with you, Scorpio? Everything. It will be enormously important for you to honor the transition that this year has been for you. It has been one HELL of a 2016 for you—breakdowns, breakthroughs, huge labors of love, massive commitments, shifts and wakeups all around. SCORPIO :: SCORPIO RISING – Eight of Swords, reversed

Happy birthday, sweet Scorpio! You are in your most shining element this month: rebirth. Novembcer leads us into the gate between autumn and winter; a sacred death cycle. For you, this time will be less about a death and more about the life that comes after it. You have been diligently moving through a soul shedding as of late—letting go, re-centering, and mastering your truth. It may not have felt that way to you, however. It may have felt like you were lost, a mess, or self-sabotaging. It has been something so much deeper than that, and now it is time to unfurl into what lies beyond—renewed, awake and aware.

Eight of Swords reversed holds the frequency of liberation from mental and emotional prisons, allowing you to walk through your life with a different world view. In other words, Scorpio: you’ve realized that the proverbial “prison door” has been unlocked the entire time. You’ve never been trapped, you’ve never had to plan an escape—you were free to leave at any time. This epiphany is what comes of being in Eight of Swords when not reversed. The reversal (which you are in this month) is the life after death. November’s invitation will be to rebirth yourself, like a phoenix from the ashes, into a more expanded, courageous life. SAGITTARIUS :: SAGITTARIUS RISING – Six of Crystals

Your cup runneth over this month, Sagittarius. What a sweet frequency to be moving through! In Six of Crystals, or Pentacles, we actually achieve a new level of balance by giving. This card heralds a time of personal blessings, gifts and energy; we have so much that we are able and happy to give some away. November is not only about enjoying the newly abundant energy that will be available to you, but about learning to give, listen and serve only when there is an overflow in your life. This is not selfish—this is wisdom. Showing up from this place of overflow assures that both you and the other person will be nourished by the exchange. The more you give, the more you will be filled up. It is a gorgeous circle of sacred replenishment.

The two keys to Six of Pentacles are balance and trust. In the Smith-Rider-Waite imagery of this card, a rich man is seen giving gold coins to two happy and grateful beggars. We see that the rich man’s brass scales are balanced—only after having given his money away to the other men. In this giveaway dance, both sides are made even, the duality is made whole. The beggars get to practice trust in receiving, the rich man gets to practice trust in giving—both sides get to master the idea that there is enough Universal abundance for all, that their needs will always be met. This is a deep healing for all parties.

You have been fighting an invisible army, Libra—and now it’s time to drop the fight and go home. Move back into the present moment, out of the head and back into the body. You cannot get where you want to go by fighting, by energetically muscling through your life. The Full Moon occurs when the Moon and Sun face-off. In Astrology, this aspect is called an Opposition. The Moon is in Aries and opposite the Sun in Libra.

Any Opposition bring our awareness to two sides of the same story. The Libra-Aries axis is the story of Relationship. Aries is relationship to oneself (identity). And Libra is relationship to another (partnership). Aries is “me” and Libra is “me and you.” Aries speaks to identity and individuality. The drive to push the ego identity forward into the world. The desire to be alive. Libra is balance and partnerships. Libra wants to objectively understand the self AND the perspective of the other person.

This Aries Full Moon offers a chance to step into a new relationship pattern. It is a time to upgrade your perspective through greater understanding of yourself and the people around you.

What is the lesson of the Aries-Libra axis? It teaches us to know ourselves well, but try to objectively understand the other person too. It teaches us to hold our boundaries. It reminds us that when we concede to another person habitually, we experience a build-up of resentment and self-victimization. It shows that when we lash out in anger, without awareness of how we influence those around us, we create pain and discord.

This axis can help us learn that anger (a trait ruled by Aries) is a powerful emotion for self-protection, and that it is productive as long as it is expressed responsibly. Ask, can you communicate your anger while still staying open to love? Or does your anger cause you to shut down? Alternatively, have you become so distanced from your anger, that it has been bottled up and transformed into resentment? (A good way to discover if you are denying your own anger is if you find yourself habitually surrounded by “angry” people).

Aries-Libra teaches how to say “Yes” to your own identity, while simultaneously acknowledging the other person’s “Yes.” To acknowledge what you need and what someone else needs. In conflict, know what you need and how you feel. Then ask the other person what they need and how they feel. Find solutions that enliven both of you. This is Aries-Libra at it’s best.

Sunday’s Aries Full Moon will open up the path to new understanding of self and other. Yet there is another dimension to this lunation that we haven’t discussed yet—the dimension of change. There is a major opportunity to change at play, because “The Great Awakener” Uranus is conjunct the Aries Full Moon.

Depending on how you orient yourself, this Moon can be shocking, or it can be fun. Where you are open, you will learn and grow. I don’t know what’s worse. Waking up in the morning without your coffee…or waking up and finding out yesterday you were one zodiac sign, and today you’re another!

Yesterday Libra, today a Scorpio; one day a Gemini, and next a Cancer. Which is kind of what’s been going on since an article surfaced a few days days ago claiming that NASA had done some calculations and “changed” astrology by adding a 13th zodiac sign—Ophiuchus—somewhere between Scorpio and Sag.

But you can breathe easy, dear ones, for nothing has changed (except the fact that…everything is always changing, lol).

Before I explain in detail let me assure you that your Sun sign (aka what you know as your zodiac sign) has not changed—you’re still very much identified with the Sun sign you were born under. Which is good, since most of us are pretty comfortable with our sign and would much rather change the color of our hair!

So allow me to explain what’s really up with NASA and the 13th zodiac sign…

Every so often, an article comes out and the media jumps on this. Editors love to “shock!” You’d think they’d be focused on the violence in the world, and that little thing called the Presidential debate. But, lo and behold, like a moth to a flame we’ve all jumped on the hysteria band wagon.

I know, I know, it’s addicting. We crave drama. But this one almost had people removing tattoos. “Ummmm hi, mom, you’re right. I should have gotten a tattoo that said I love you instead of the Pisces symbol I got backpacking through Thailand in my 20’s…”

And yes, there is a wobble on the earth’s axis due to the moon’s gravitational pull. And it’s true that this has created a shift which means the sun doesn’t align exactly with the constellations as it did when astrology, as we know it, was discovered/defined. Turns out our universe expands, just like we do.

However, the type of astrology that we use (as in the majority of the Western world, and what you find in most mainstream magazines and articles) refers to what’s called the “tropical zodiac.”

This zodiac “system” does not take the minute shifts in the earth’s axis into consideration, since it is more symbolic and archetypal in nature, and it is also linked to the seasons (equinoxes and solstices) as a measure of time.

The articles that you’ve been reading which tell you about a change in your zodiac sign are referring to “sidereal zodiac”—a different system that does take into account the wobble/shift of the earth’s axis, since it’s measured against the fixed stars and constellations (vs. the seasons).

The sidereal zodiac is more often used by astronomers (not astrologers) who, if you ask any of them, will adamantly tell you that astrology is not a science. My response to this is that “science” is just a word, a label. It doesn’t even really matter. After all, the beauty of being a human equipped with free will, is that there’s always more than one way to see things…

As a professional astrologer, I use the tropical zodiac since over the years I’ve seen how accurate it is to help understand someone on an emotional level. It is also strongly based on cycles, patterns, archetypes, energy, and vibration. When we have dreams or get information from spirit it often comes through in archetypes, patterns, symbols etc. This is the language of the Universe.

I believe that since we have free will, astrology was never meant to be used as a tool for prediction. And so it’s the meanings implied by the aspects described by an individual birth chart that I focus on—for it’s this information that can be used to track cycles and phases that your soul is evolving under.

All of that was a fancy way for saying, you don’t have to worry, nothing has changed…yet, everything has changed! I know, it’s ironic, but such is the magick of life.

LIBRA :: LIBRA RISING – Awakening/Judgment, reversed

Happy birthday, dear Libra! The medicine of the Awakening, or Judgment card, is extremely advanced—the reversal even more so. The focus of October for you will be deep inner looking, particularly around the areas of self judgment, self loathing, and self doubt. When reversed, as it is for you this month, this card can feel like a hamster wheel of old patterns, particularly of the mind: the same setbacks, issues and problems can present themselves again and again.

But all of this negativity is coming to the forefront to be released, Libra. This particular karmic cycle of self-judgment is ready to be transformed into self acceptance, self love, and inner wisdom. You have all the tools within you to do this already, you just need to get curious. Ask questions of yourself. Look at your family lineage; the way they spoke to one another and themselves. It will be important for you to investigate why you get caught in these tough places, and how you can wake up from the patterns that keep you locked in pain and self-doubt.

This card is here this month because you’re ready for it. You asked for it. It’s not here as a punishment; it’s doing the most important, nitty-gritty work imaginable, clearing out the dustiest corners, the darkest rooms within you. You’re ready to live in your full truth, and this is only possible when we choose to see beyond our fear-based patterning. Which is really tough, but worth it. SCORPIO :: SCORPIO RISING – Seven of Cups

October offers you the opportunity to get some much needed grounding, Scorpio—to hit pause on the thinking and get back to the present moment. This is all in service of taking an inventory of your life: what you want to accomplish, how you want to do it, and where you might be drifting off your present course. Seven of Cups often comes to us when we are experiencing some form of distraction…that we may not immediately feel is a distraction. A perfect example is shirking a deadline because you feel you absolutely had to clean the house before you sat down to write. I know that feels like a legitimate requirement, but in truth, you just have to write—messy house or not.

The impulse to clean before we write is a lure, one that is so sly we might not immediately see how it is tricking us out of the one thing we really need to focus on. This usually happens because there is a web of discomfort and insecurity about how to actually focus on the issue at hand, the next most important step. Your job this month will be to face your resistance so you can move through it. This is certainly not difficult, and is very easily shifted!

The point is to get present, clear and curious—to catch yourself in those little impulses and when you do, hang out with them. Ask questions. Consider why they might be here. Deal with the discomfort and resistance at hand, and you will move mountains. This is about how to infuse your dreams with empowerment, bringing you from thought to action. Seven of Cups is inviting you to snap out of a fantasy you might be keeping yourself in so you don’t have to deal with the fact that you’re stuck on how to move forward.

The benefit to popping this daydream bubble for yourself, Scorpio, is to deal with the resistance and move from there. So be really honest with yourself. Make sure your actions and next steps are rooted in truth—and are what you really wanted in the first place. This sounds simple, but it wouldn’t be coming up for you if it wasn’t something to think about. SAGITTARIUS :: SAGITTARIUS RISING – Five of Cups, reversed

To truly appreciate what’s in store for you this month, Sagittarius, we have to consider the imagery in the traditional Five of Cups tarot card: A man, brokenhearted and robed in black, is mourning three spilled and scattered cups in front of him. He is deeply lost in his story, his heartache, his darkness. He feels, as Five of Cups can often feel, like nothing will ever be okay again, he will never be happy. This card can truly feel like a hole of grief.

However—behind this grieving man, are two full, standing cups. We can see them, but he cannot. He must turn around, leaving his story, to see what the treasure might be on the other side of his pain. The medicine and the invitation of Five of Cups is life-altering; to come out of our grief long enough to consider this turn of the spirit, turn of the heart—to see that we stand to gain everything we believe we’d lost, and more. This is a very powerful experience, one that heals regret, helps us trust ourselves, and brings us into the next steps of our lives, full and abundant. It’s a heart healer. This is the soul of the Five of Cups, the teaching that it brings.

But, of course, you have the Five of Cups reversed this month, Sagittarius, which is wonderful news, actually! The reversal, in fact, IS the turn of the head toward what is full, and away from what is empty. It is the leap of faith that comes when we move and seek in a way we never have before, bringing us into great joy and surprises. The moment we wake up and our pain dissolves. You are going to be seeing the two full cups everywhere in October; it is a very emotionally abundant time for you, indeed. Personal transformation is possible, and it is a time of new beginnings.

Dive deeply into the blessings at hand, courageously turn away from what does not fill you up—what has been lost, scattered, is no more. CAPRICORN :: CAPRICORN – Five of Swords

This month is very important for you, Capricorn. You get to do a lot of really important work on the art of re-centering after a disappointment, especially one you thought would work in your favor. Doing so will help you to see the wisdom in your choices, and learn how to be lighter on yourself. It will also help you learn how to be more present and responsible for your actions.

Before you get bummed out: everyone on the planet needs to learn this at some point. It is absolutely a part of the human experience to make choices and have some of them burn—the genius in this, is that we get to learn how wisely respond with ease and grace.

No story. No victimhood, guilt, shame or fear. If you flush your medication down the toilet and start to feel really off, call your doctor and explain. If you ghosted someone and it makes you feel terrible, email them and apologize. If you GOT ghosted by someone who you were really excited by, mourn it, feel the loss of it—but don’t take it personally. While these can be painful emotional experiences, they do not get to drive the car, so to speak. If you can remember this, and have compassion for yourself, there will be the opportunity for major personal expansion this month.

The key to the energy you are in this month, Capricorn, is to investigate the source of these choices. It’s never just self sabotage, being unlucky, or being unable to commit. That’s lazy, and you’re worthy of more than this kind of emotional write off. That is why this card demands that we release our “story” about the situation, and get back to empowered action. There’s a reason why you made the choices that you did. Your opportunity is to dive deep and ask yourself why.

Were you looking for something external to fill an internal void? Is a certain amount of happiness and stability really frightening to you? If the answer is yes, it’s not a problem—it just makes you human. Shining, glorious, perfect in your imperfection. This re-centering is how people change, Capricorn. It is how people TRULY grow, genuinely evolve. This is how we can learn to forgive ourselves, and to forgive others. Drop the story, investigate, and gain softness in the face of your humanness.

PISCES :: PISCES RISING – Transformation/Death, reversed

The Death card has graced you with its presence, Pisces: you are ready to move through a cycle of rebirth and renewal. This is amazing news, and always comes bearing a positive and wonderful outcome. The Death card is never anything to be scared of. It is, as the Starchild Tarot calls it, a transformation—an alchemical expansion of the soul, the voluntary sloughing off of some aspect of ego in favor of a deeper alignment with one’s self. Everything that dies off in the Death card becomes wisdom, food that nourishes whatever is ready to take root and grow in its absence. It brings nothing but goodness—even if it can be a little intense to move through.

The reversal of the Death card simply indicates a resistance to letting go. Why do we resist Death—and the resulting rebirth? There are a seemingly infinite number of reasons: the unknown, loss of control, fear that we will never have a better situation than the one we currently do. These are all things to question this month. The reasons we fear and resist the initiation of Death is always egoic, always brain chemistry—it is only these parts of us that fear the unknown, never the soul.

This is important for you to understand, so you can choose compassion for yourself as you explore why you might be less inclined to move through this cycle in certain areas of your life. Pour your attention and focus into the intention to surrender and trust. Surrender to the life/death/life cycle, remembering that there is no Death, no letting go, without rebirth. It is only a new beginning, never an ending.

The new beginning is here for you because you’ve worked for it! You’ve manifested, prayed, released, called in—now you’re ready to actually let go, and free fall into the Void. Whatever is leaving your life this month, Pisces—be it a job, a way of living, a relationship, an old pattern, a belief system—it is being replaced with something better and seriously upgraded. ARIES :: ARIES RISING – Serenity/The Hermit, reversed

Allow this month to be an exercise in empowered solitary time, Aries. Take gentle space from social activities, carving out spiritually nourishing alone time. Go within, spend tons of time outside, connect with nature, up your meditation practice; get back to basics with food, ritual, and self-care. Take a vacation and turn your phone off. It’s very important to not assume that swaths of time will just present themselves for this level of personal practice—for you, there’s always something to do, and to focus on. And so you must maintain excellent boundaries this month, letting there be ample time for reconnection and just be-ing.

No accomplishing, no strategizing, just being with and by yourself in a deep way for moments at a time. October will offer you the opportunity, no matter how full or busy your schedule might be, to take gentle action on behalf of your spiritual serenity. Doing so, honoring that this is the most important thing for you to focus on, will greatly improve your overall quality of life, and will deepen your connection to yourself and the world around you.

Serenity, or The Hermit is the Tarot’s “sacred pause” card. There is truly nothing to do other than to go within when we are in this card—time almost energetically curves to support that. There is no booking of flights, no big movements, no huge decisions in this energy, and that’s totally aligned. The focus is always drawn within, to “chop wood and carry water,” as the saying goes. The Hermit is so important because it offers us a time to not only refresh, but to temper the ego and brain down so that we get the chance to stop taking action in a harried, desperate way. We can come to understand in this card that there is no rush—that everything happens exactly when it is supposed to.

The reversal of The Hermit indicates that you’re leaking energy, allowing your time and thoughts to be taken up with stuff that isn’t filling you up and serving you. It’s also why you’ve been asked to be very empowered and thorough with your personal boundaries—to practice pausing and tuning in before you say yes to anything this month. I mean ANYTHING. The more you speak and honor your truth, the more spiritually nourishing space you will have for yourself. Your time is deeply sacred; start treating it that way.

Astrologically speaking, besides the ten planets, there are five major asteroids that help us deepen our understanding of ourselves: Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta and Lilith. These asteroids orbit the Sun in a belt located between Mars and Jupiter.

Juno, discovered on September 1, 1804 by Karl L. Harding was named (in the Roman tradition) after the wife of Jupiter. What is Juno in the birth chart? Juno represents marriage and partnerships and our attitudes toward commitment and equality in relationships.

Being the partner of a rather philandering god, Juno also tells us how to work with the shadow side of relationships like domestic abuse, inequality, possessiveness and jealousy.

The clock is chiming and it is time to process the feelings of the past.

“After years of working for other people and putting all my creative energy into their dreams, I finally decided to do my own thing a couple of years back. I have worked on various projects since, some more successful than others—and while I try to always learn from the lessons of my ‘failures’ it can be hard not to focus on things that have gone wrong, and blame myself. Lately this has made me fearful about continuing on the entrepreneurial path and I’ve been fantasizing about the ‘easy life’—i.e. working for somebody else again—even though I know in my heart this would make me depressed and leave me craving my freedom again. How can I get past my mistakes and remain confident about pursuing my own dreams?”

Dear Dreamer,

Almost everyone sometimes feels trapped between two worlds; one world we know, the other we don’t really know…but we have some ideas. One world is exhilarating and free, and the other is safe, but is a prison. The world of safety, as you pointed out, can often be boring, unfulfilling, and limiting, while the world of the unknown—where our hidden, unlimited potential lies—is scary. Until we jump in, that is.

These two realities are spoken of in Hindu philosophy. There is the reality that can be measured, is logical, has size, shape and weight—and the reality that cannot: thoughts, emotions, inspiration, potential and creativity. We can measure our bodies, possessions, money, buildings, cars, cities, even the Universe, but we cannot measure that things that inhabit these spaces: knowledge, love, compassion, empathy, dreams, ambitions, hopes, desires, potential and friendship.

The reality that can be measured is called sakala, “with form,” and the reality that cannot is called nishkala, “without form.” However, they are both real—they both exist! The realm of man is the sakala realm, and the realm of the Gods—as well as our hopes, dreams, potential and feelings—is nishkala.

We get stuck in the world of quantification, of measurement, because that is what our world demands of us. How many followers do we have on IG? How much money do I have in the bank? Do I have six packs in my abs, or only one and a half? We measure, we compare, and we are miserable in doing so, because we always come up short. And we measure because we don’t know who we are.

In Yoga, this knowing who we are is the solution to all misery. It is the plug that let’s all the dirty, stinky water down the drain. For when we truly know who we are, we are immeasurable, pure consciousness. When we don’t know who we are, we are limited by the things we measure ourselves against.

When we don’t know who we are, we imitate those who project the kind of confidence and knowledge, or beauty or wit, that we wished we had. We give up the struggle of discovering who we are, by playing it safe, and taking on someone else’s self-expression. But in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says to Arjuna, “It’s better to do your own dharma poorly, then to do the dharma of another well”, meaning, it’s better to do your own thing and fail, rather than do someone else’s thing and succeed.

Why? Because you’ll never be happy and never find fulfillment with someone else’s purpose, only with your own. And it’s only you who can discover what that is. When you do, is when freedom begins. It’s how you access the realm of nishkala, and bring it forward, actively, into your life.

In the Tarot, a card which seems to accurately represent the dilemma that you are in right now, is the Two of Wands. The image on the card is of a person standing between two upright wands; he is holding onto one of the wands with his left hand, and in his right, he is holding a globe, or, the world, as he gazes off towards the distance.

The meanings of the card can relate to decision making; you have reached a fork in the road, so to speak, and there are two directions you can go. One direction will lead you towards freedom and abundance, and the other towards safety, which is binding, and will be fraught with self-doubt. The card symbolizes independence and boldness on the one hand, and fear of failure, and dependence on others, on the other.

Being bold is an expression of personal power, which is simply another terms for your unique potential and creativity. Now may be the time for you to own that originality within you, and be bold enough to express it in the world. You may have had some failures, and you will definitely have fears to face head on, but in the end, regardless of success or failure, you will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you were brave enough to listen.

The important thing is to keep at your work. Your creativity will continue to grow as you feed it. It will continue to grow as you use if for work that aligns with your own vision.

There are three key words I’ve seen associated with the Two of Wands: personal power (which I read as infinite potential channeled through us each as unique individuals); boldness; and originality. Your potential will become clearer the more you exercise it; your boldness will increase when you face your fears directly and don’t let them rule you; and last, connecting with your own work, and your own originality, will lead you towards personal fulfillment, which is true success.

But the Two of Wands reminds us of one other thing: we do not own our creativity, or our potential, or power. These are channeled through us, and if we are lucky, we can tap into them and express them through our actions and attitudes. We should remain humble knowing that we are not the authors of our creativity or power, that we are conduits, and that when creativity flows through us, all goes well. But when we try to control it, or think that we are special because of it, things will eventually go south. Be bold, but be humble. Be fearless, but also, be grateful.

A yogic practice you can try to balance out the two realities that we all live in is alternate nostril breathing. It’s fairly simple, is calming, and balances both hemispheres of the brain.

  1. Begin by sitting comfortably in a chair, or cross-legged on the floor.
  1. With your right hand, you make the Vishnu Mudra, which looks like this.
  1. Place your right thumb against your right nostril, inhale and exhale 3-5 times through your left nostril. Your breathing should be smooth and even, not too long, and not too short. Usually a 3-4 second inhale and exhale is a good place to start.
  1. After 3-5 breaths, close your left nostril with your right ring finger, and breath the same amount of times through the right nostril. Your breathing should be smooth and even, with the same length of breath that you used on the left side (3-4 seconds inhale, 3-4 seconds exhale).
  1. After 4 breaths through the right side, place your right hand back into your lap or on to your knee, and take 3-5 slow deep breaths.

You can do this once or twice a day—morning and evening, and before having food, are optimal times to try it. There are many variations of alternate nostril breathing, that overall have some of the same effects. This one in particular is single nostril, or unilateral, breathing, and has been show to have positive effects on both spatial awareness (knowing where you are in space, and where things are in relation to you), and improving cognitive abilities. I think the two wands in the Two of Wands card are reminiscent of the nostrils, and the subtle energy channels that are attached to them! Try it, and see if it helps.

VIRGO :: VIRGO RISING – Two of Swords

Happy birthday, sweet Virgos! The collective energy for the month could be summed up with the following phrase: we go in to come out. Think of September as an opportunity for us all to “Kondo” our souls, to consider whether our thoughts are useful, or bring us great joy. If they do not, to be willing to upgrade them. Where do you oppress yourself, Scorpio? Where do you get stuck in “shoulds” and judgments, guilt, shame or doubt? Where do you obsess? More importantly, and more directly, where in your life do you beat yourself up for having the above thoughts, impulses and experiences in the first place? These are vital inquiries for the month of September—ones that will set you free if you allow them to.

Oppression, or The Devil card in the traditional Tarot deck, is going to be walking you through the process of releasing any old mental patterns or addictive cycles that are causing you suffering. Any time we can remove the veil of self loathing around our habits or behaviors, there is the potential for personal transformation and freedom.

How do we break the chain of oppression of the self? Drop the story completely that there’s a problem with any invitation of the mind. It doesn’t matter what it is, ANY thought is just a thought; you don’t have to believe it, and there is nothing wrong with you for having it. You are ready to let go of a BIG cycle of self-oppression this month, Scorpio. Allow The Devil card to be the way home, the mirror into truth. It holds the key to freedom from the chains that bind us. The medicine of this card will give you the opportunity to free yourself from any outdated mental cycles that keep you stuck and small. Temperance is the alchemical bringer of transformation; it makes the impossible possible, and teaches us how to replace striving with allowing. The energy of this month is asking you to trust in the unknown in a way you never have before, Capricorn. You are learning to walk gracefully through the world while unseen and incredible threads are being woven together on your behalf. It’s a much better option than pushing, working or struggling to tie the threads together in a way that exhausts or drains you. Let it be easier; begin to foster trust that you will have everything in your life that is aligned for you in one way or another. The medicine of Temperance is largely mysterious. Even the imagery on the traditional Rider Waite card suggests that miracles are happening: the blending of fire and water, the angel’s ability to balance on two uneven surfaces, the pouring of the water at a scientifically impossible angle. It’s letting us know, visually, that events are occurring in a magical way, in a way that would be impossible for any human being to accomplish. If we attempted any of the gravity defying feats that the Angel in the Temperance card does so effortlessly, we would fail. We would spill the water, we would lose our balance; we would put out the fire with the water over and over again.

We don’t just “get” this card in a reading—it is earned. It is earned through the willingness to release the grip of control in favor of surrender and trust. It is a very powerful sign of all things good and transformational, and indicates that you have done potent work to get to where you are. You are ready to level up and receive something new from the Universe, Capricorn, and Temperance is preparing you to do so. Lay yourself bare; let fire and water flow within you. Energetically surrender anything you are manifesting or wishing for, even without knowing the how or the why. The more you release, the more will come flowing in.

Three of Wands is a spectacular energy, one that is deeply creatively fulfilling. The month will be overflowing with excitement, potential and reason for celebration. This card comes up when we have worked—and worked you have, Aries. You know what it takes to fulfill your goals and dreams, and you have hustled to get there—now you get to experience the payoff for much of it. Its an amazing time, full of potential and an indication of all of the hard work you’ve been doing, but not much slowing down. The best thing to do is work within that structure. TAURUS :: TAURUS RISING – Four of Swords

September is an organic invitation to really rest, Taurus, avoiding any unnecessarily stressful, chaotic or frenzied situations. Taking a break from more dramatic friends or family members is also advised, as well as allowing for ample alone time to re-center through the month. Trust your gut completely on the amount of recharge time you need, as it truly will be the compass that guides you through a peaceful September. If you happen to be more open, empathic, or intuitive, the above advice will be a requirement, not a suggestion.

Four of Swords calls for a mental break, a true rest of the mind. It usually arises when we are in transition, or moving through something that is kicking up a lot of emotional dirt. The card’s energy actually serves to sweep away the debris, leaving us clear and lighter. Respect the fact that you might need more time to yourself this month, Taurus, and that that’s perfect for you. I mention that because FOMO can sometimes arise with this card, which can be painful—know that if you truly need to take a month away from people and recharge, you can honor that completely. They will still love you when you feel more called to be social.

It is wise to offer yourself as much space as possible during this Mercury Retrograde in Virgo, which is just going to want to make you curl up into your blankets and take it easy. Please treat yourself to that as often as you are able! This particular retrograde might be a little intense for you, especially around situations that make you insecure and more paranoid. You just might need a little more space to distinguish between whether something is your imagination or whether it is fact. Within this time of being more internal, emphasize sweetness and really treat yourself when you can. Make sure you are clearing yourself every day with sage, palo santo, and using selenite at night before you go to bed to cut any cords or release energy. Keep your third eye and crown chakra really beaming bright.

If you’re someone with very little personal time, don’t be surprised if the Universe helpfully hands you some more time to yourself: a shift to your child’s nap, a surprise work day from home, an evening obligation that gets cancelled. Just flow with the energy of the month, and take the chance to go within.

GEMINI :: GEMINI RISING – Queen of Crystals

Err on the side of pragmatism this month, Gemini. Go slowly through September, ground yourself regularly and drop into the body before making big decisions. It is extremely advisable to be as classically oriented as you can with this Mercury Retrograde: not too many big decisions, not too many far reaching plans. Let it be a time that is more in than out, more thoughtful and mellow than energized. A good rule of thumb is if you feel really personally stretched, it would be wise to shelve what you possibly can until October.

Queen of Crystals, or Pentacles, is bringing a depth and a groundedness to your daily life that will be a deeply beneficial energy to your movement through the Retrograde this month. She’s slowing you down, and the main reason is because October is going to be bananas for you!

The fall will hold LOTS of movement, expansion and energy, so take measured steps while you can. Let this Queen show you the way. The Queen of Crystals is the holder of water and earth; she is the healer of the body and the keeper of wise ways. She is doing two things for you, Gemini, she’s slowing you down and bringing you into your body.

You can look at the latter as being very straight forward: emphasize physical exercise, nourish your body with foods that make your cells sing, hydrate like it’s your job, and love yourself up. Take baths, have beautiful sex and/or self-pleasure, go on walks, lay on the grass before it gets too cold. Travel deep into your magical weirdness this month, Cancer. I mean that in the best way possible! September’s energy wants you to come out and play. The being on the card owns himself, wears what he wants, and doesn’t care if you don’t get him: he knows who he is and feels fabulous. Page of Cups is a full expression of love, magic, weirdness and creativity borne of the freedom to be fully ourselves.

The way back home to the child spirit within you, Cancer, is play. In order to play, our nervous systems must be relaxed. LEO :: LEO RISING – Four of Cups

Four of Cups is offering you a much needed and well deserved break in external engagements this month, Leo. It will be a potent opportunity for career advancements, personal projects, deep study into something new, or focusing on your health and wellbeing. Just be willing to create a little space between yourself and others this month, unless the person feels like true soul family. If it feels effortful, or if there are any “shoulds” involved, steer clear—at least for this month. The Retrograde is going to be extremely important for all Leos, providing an organic opportunity to clear away any past relationship karma, and to develop a new level of personal trust in your decisions. If exes come back up out of the woodwork this month, that’s great—you get the chance to definitively release them. Say bye and then block ‘em.

I always mention this in some capacity with the Four of Cups in my Tarotscopes: the traditional meaning of this card is, in my opinion, extremely misunderstood in one important capacity. Many people believe that there is deliberate self-sabotage happening with Four of Cups, that we are in some way making ourselves unavailable to new situations or potential relationships, saying no when we should say yes. I call bullshit. That fear (that we are going to miss something) is the very reason why we need Four of Cups energy in the first place.

The pure essence of the card is a wise inner break: an emotional clearing and a chance to go within and digest past experiences. This decision to heal and integrate is largely shunned in a culture that tells us to push through everything and to be on high alert constantly, lest we miss something. We can never, ever pass by what is truly ours. It will always find us. It is safe to trust in our decisions.

I mention this because it is important to trust yourself within this energy, Leo. Trust the time it takes you to heal, to clear and to ready yourself to engage again. You owe an explanation to no one. Four of Cups, like Four of Swords can bring up an intense feeling of FOMO; know that this is not only part of the card, but part of life. Don’t let it stop you from saying “no thank you” when your body is really asking you do. Trust yourself, go within, clear what is ready to be cleared—including self-doubt.

Virgo season asks us to sharpen our tools, clarify our intentions, and get back down to the sweet labors of love that just feel good in our bodies. The zodiac’s so-called “virgin” is actually a fiercely self-contained sensualist who’s married to her own internal code, trusts deeply in her distinctiveness, and finds delicious divinity in daily detail.

It’s a month for relaxing into the subtlest material pieces of our lives—from savored flavors and ephemeral scents to watching the way the light hits the pavement just so—and for relishing in the feeling of processual work that moves with the rhythm of what is without having to prove anything at all.

SATURN DIRECT IN SAGITTARIUS (8/13/16—12/20/17) :: KEYWORD – “MOMENTUM”

In the late summer of 1938 three young, French nationals, Genevieve and Bernard de Colmont and Antoine de Seynes, arrived in America to take their kayaks down the Green and Colorado Rivers (a feat that had never been attempted before). This French Trio brought with them state-of-the-art kayaks, cameras, camping gear and, because they didn’t trust American drinking water, all the beer they could carry. This was no small feat, as they would have to paddle down 900 miles of very rough water. Three months later they rowed into Lee’s Ferry, Arizona river-worn but transformed by the experience.

Saturn turned direct in Sagittarius on August 13. Do you feel a new sense momentum? Retrogrades often remind us to slow down, practice patience, to revise our to-do lists and check our supplies, twice. And with Saturn direct and moving again, warmed also by the energy of Mars in Sagittarius, the time is ripe to set sail on an adventure/venture that’s been some time in the planning. Like the French trio, the time has come to point our paddles downstream.

Saturn direct in Sagittarius is not however, about doing things fly-by-night. Preparation is extremely important, as Saturn wants to methodically build the right foundation, to make sound calculations, and to consider any and all costs involved. The French trio was well prepared for their journey; dear readers you must do the same.

Sagittarius housing both Saturn and Mars insists that the intention with any ventures put into motion now is to grow, expand, and learn. It’s time to take that class, to fly to Indonesia for a yoga teacher training, to learn a language, start a non-profit, activate a latent passion.
